CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS FOR METAL SHAPING

Abstract

Several gel systems were prepared with acid solutions suspended in a gel matrix of organic, water soluble resins. These gel etchants can be cast into semirigid shapes and are stable at temperatures up to 140 to 160 F. In contact with a steel surface, the gel etchants chemically react and remove metal at a controlled rate. The reaction products and reactants migrate countercurrently through the gel media. Further development and testing will determine applicability as non-liquid etchants. (Author)
