LANGUAGE ORIENTED RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS

Abstract

This theoretical study is divided into three major areas: syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. These terms are used in the sense usually employed by what was once called logical positivism. Syntax, then, is concerned with a system of formal rules; semantics adds content to the symbolism; and pragmatics introduces the human element. The three parts were written independently and are published in the original version. The prologue and epilogue provide a brief statement of the author's current position.
