Finite Deformations in a Prestressed, Centrally Loaded Circular Elastic Membrane.

Abstract

The load-deflection characteristic of a prestressed circular membrane which is subjected to a concentrated central force is determined analytically and experimentally. In the analytical treatment, the Ritz-Galerkin method is used to extremize total potential energy. In the experimental study, tests are made on Mylar plastic film which is prestressed by means of edge weights and loaded by a small-diameter probe. Comparison is made between analytical and experimental results, and good agreement is found. (Author)
