DETERMINATION OF ELECTRON DENSITY USING THE MICROWAVE CAVITY TECHNIQUE

Abstract

The microwave cavity method of plasma diagnostics is discussed. This study includes theoretical background, as well as the development of a simple relationship of resonant frequency shift to electron density. Mathematical treatment of an actual experiment is given, with results (in good agreement with previous measurements) presented for the afterglow decay of electron density in a neon plasma. There are several innovations in electronic circuitry described, including (1) techniques for the production of ionization pulses of a more precisely controlled nature than previously employed and (2) a graphic readout of cavity resonance shift on a cathode ray oscilloscope.
