MARTENSITIC TRANSFORMATION IN SINGLE CRYSTALS OF IRON ALLOYS. I. ATHERMAL MARTENSITE IN A STAINLESS STEEL

Abstract

Iden ifiers: Dislocations. The morphology and crystallography of the martensite transfor ation was studied in single crystals of an Fe-16 Cr-12 Ni alloy, representing an austenitic stainless st l. The transformation proceed through a sequence of tructures from fcc to hcp o bcc, originati g with the hcp tructure in the (111) sub A plane, which subsequently transforms to bcc plates. A one surface analysis indicates that the habit plane of the plates is near (225) sub A. Relative orientation of the 3 structures, lattice para eters, M sub s mpera ur and reversion characteristics were determined and was consi re it re pect to the tran formation mechanism. (Author)
