AN INCLINED-PISTON DEAD-WEIGHT PRESSURE GAUGE

Abstract

An inclined-piston gauge for accurate vapor-pressure measurements in the range 0.1 to 40 mm. was designed and constructed. The gauge operates on the dead-weight principle from a zero pressure datum level. The test measurements on ice and water demonstrate the excellent possibilities the inclined-piston gauge offers as an instrument for very precise and accurate vapor pressure work in the low and intermediate pressure range. Present applications include determining vapor pressures below room temperature for high boiling or unstable organic substances that cannot be studied by other static or ebulliometric methods and for detonable or rare substances which require the use of small samples. From the results, accurate values of the heat and entropy of vaporization and entropy of compression can be calculated. (Author)
