MEASURED TRANSITION PROBABILITY FOR THE FIRST-POSITIVE BAND SYSTEM OF NITROGEN

Abstract

The electronic transition probability for the N first-positive system was obtained from absolute spectr l-intensity measurements of the IR radiation from shock-heated N. The temperature dependence of he spec rum agreed with that determin d for N in hermo ynamic equilibrium. An electro ic transition moment equal to 0.096 atomic uni s and ind pendent of internuclear separation gave the best fit to e d . The m asured i ensities were lower by a factor of 5 than those repor d for measurem nts in shockheated air. A second component of radiation was detected, attribu able to either the CN red or N2+ M in l band systems. Further experiments indicated that thi radiation was not due to the Meinel bands. (Author)
