THE ROLE OF THE EMISSION CHANNEL IN AN ION SOURCE

Abstract

The mechanism for sparks in long gaps of various types with various types of applied voltages is treated. Descriptions are given of the apparatus, setups, and methods of measurements that were used in studying the nature of sparks. Consideration is given to the successive spark stages in various discharge gaps (basically in air gaps) and with various types of voltages. Problems of important practical value are discussed in the light of generalized laws for the development of the surge discharge. Analyses are made of methods for computing and obtaining experimentally the volt-second characteristics of insulation, and methods are recommended for obtaining more correct values. An exposition is given of modern theories for lightning formation, and experimental results based upon the study of lightning.
