MODULATED ELECTRON BEAM DIAGNOSTICS IN PLASMAS

Abstract

The feasi ility of modulated electron beam diagnostics in warm plasmas is applied t an actual system. it was concluded that, since the scattering of the beam electrons by neutral particles forces the use of high beam voltages which, in turn, makes the bunching length i practicably long, t e diagnostic would be useful only in discharges at low gas densities an relatively high electron densities. The experiment has yet to e tried in such a plasma s stem. Strong electron density oscillati n were detected by a fast-acting microwave syste in the apparently steady hot-cathode argon discharge. Optical studies and a plot of oscillation frequency vs gas pressure s owed that the oscillations were examples of the well-known ving striations. (A THOR)
