THE POLAR CAP ABSORPTION EVENTS OF JULY 11-20, 1961

Abstract

The polar cap absorption of July 12 has been classed as an SC-max event, showing maximum absorption after the SC associated with the cosmic ray flare. The PCA of July 18 belongs to the class of pre-SC-max events, with the maximum absorption attained well before the associated SC storm. Recently available data from the satellite Injun I shows that the characteristics of the two events are in agreement with the magnitudes of the flux of protons below 15 Mev relative to the total flux above 40 Mev; the July 12 PCA was a low energy event, that of July 18 a high energy event.
