ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF OXIDES OF SOME LANTHANIDE RARE EARTH ELEMENTS

Abstract

Electrical conduction was studied in ceramic CeO2 and Pr2O3 from room temperature to near 600 C. Measurements were primarily 2-contact direct current type although some 2-contact ac measurements were made on CeO2. Some electrical conductivity effects of departures from stoichiometry were studied in Pr2O3 and CeO2 using a quartz-beam microbalance. At temperatures between 400 and 600 C, the current which flows between Pt electrodes through CeO2 at constant applied potential showed a decreasing transient. Above 600 C, the low-bias transients became increasing transients and at intermediate biases the transients disappeared. The ac resistance and capacitance of CeO2 ceramic pellet with Pt electrodes were strongly frequency dependent. The ac sample resistance decreased with frequency as did the capacitance. At low frequency the capacitance became very large and if this capacitance were considered to be a bulk material effect it would correspond to a very large dielectric coefficient at frequencies near 100 C. Sintered ceramic pellets of CeO2 containing 1% CaO appeared to exhibit ionic conduction and electrolysis under the action of an applied dc potential. (Author)
