A PARAPROPAGATION PATTERN CLASSIFIER

Abstract

The pattern classifier is described which determines the class of a pattern by the relative success with which the pattern's image or a derived pattern's image in a rectangular matrix of cells shields a portion of the cells of the matrix from propagated changes of state initiated at borders of the matrix. The component requirements of the basic cell and the variety of commands needed to perform all necessary operations are comparatively modest. Independence of pattern irregularities and minor ornamentation is achieved by means of a threshold element whose threshold level is especially selected according to each binary decision to be made.
