STRATIFICATION OF THE 300 MB GEOSTROPHIC WIND FIELD BY GROSSWETTER TYPES

Abstract

As an experiment in stratified climatology, Grosswetter types and the combination of Grosswetter types into larger classes were used as predictors for the 300-mb geostrophic winds over Eastern Europe. Eight years of winter season data (1950-1957) and data for March 1958 were used. Forecasts using stratified data were compared with those of unstratified data by analysis of the reduction in error statistic. Certain Grosswetter types and the combination of Grosswetter types have shown significant improvement over climatology for limited areas, but not for the entire area. (Author)
