ELECTROSTATIC INSTABILITY OF AN INTENSE ELECTRON BEAM IN A PLASMA

Abstract

IT IS SHOWN THAT THE CURRENT DENSITY IN A QUASINEUTRAL BEAM OF FAST ELECTRONS PROPAGATED IN A PLASMA HAS AN UPPER LIMIT ABOVE WHICH THE BEAM BECOMES UNSTABLE WITH RESPECT TO THE FORMATION OF A VIRTUAL CATHODE. The mechanism of this instability is discussed. (Author)
