BACKGROUND FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MATERIALS TO BE USED IN HIGH-STRENGTH-STEEL STRUCTURAL WELDMENTS

Abstract

A summary prepared from information obtained in a survey of the literature on the properties and welding of high-strength steels is presented. The object of the survey w s to gather informa tio from the literature for use in the development of base plates, weld metals, and welding method o produce thick submarine hull weldments with a yield strength of 150,000 psi and acceptable fractur behavior. The results of the survey indic te that a long difficul ro of re earc and development lies ahead. Studies of alternative designs and methods of construction should be carried on concurrently to try to eliminat the need for thick weldments. (Author)
