Abstract
System Development Corp., Santa Monica, Calif. A COMPARISON OF HUMAN PERFORMANCE UNDER NATURAL LANGUAGE AND TERM DIAGRAM PROCEDURES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF REPORT SUMMARIES, by John D. Ford, Jr. and Emory H. Holmes. 6 Feb 62, 16p. incl. illus. 11 refs. (Technical memo. no. TM-662/000/00) Unclassified report DESCRIPTORS: (*Abstracting, *Documentation, Information retrieval, Automation.) (Language, Reduction, Theory.)An experimental study to increase our understanding of how human beings extract information from natural language expressions is presented. This may be regarded as a preliminary study of human performance in the production of report summaries in which severe format restrictions result in a task which departs from the natural language habits of human beings. This report presents a discussion of the problem and a description of the experiment. The next report series will discuss the results of performance pertaining to the three main variables, method, content and order of presentation. A third part of this series will present a number of ex post facto analyses of the data primarily with the intent of illuminating the language data processing behavior of human beings in the task of selecting information and writing summaries from written text.
