DESIGN CRITERIA FOR MISSILES
Abstract
The requirements of missile control system design are compared with those of manned aircraft, showing where advantage can be taken of the absence of aircrew or passengers. Safety requirements are less severe, and a satisfactory mission may be achieved in spite of localised instability problems. The criterion is that the missile must reach its goal without having suffered catastrophic damage en route, and unstable behaviour must be assessed in this light. The basic problems which beset the missile designer are reviewed. The steps which he must take to ensure that all problems have been satisfactorily solved are discussed. (Author)
