STATE OF THE ART OF ESTIMATION OF DERIVATIVES

Abstract

Methods presently available for the estimation of the usual longitudinal and lateral stability derivatives of an aircraft are briefly discussed for each derivative in turn. An introductory section deals with trends in aircraft geometry and their implications regarding the stability deriatives. To illustrate this further the general discussion of methods is followed by a rather more detailed consideration of the estimation of these derivatives for a slender-wing type of aircraft, mainly at low speeds, when incidence effects are shown to be important. The growing importance of such higher-order aerodynamic derivatives poses the question whether the derivative approach is becoming inadequate. Possible alternative formulation of the aerodynamics is mentioned and briefly considered. (Author)
