M-ARY TRANSMISSIONS WITH LINEAR FILTERING ON RAYLEIGH FADING CIRCUITS

Abstract

O N A NONFADING CIRCUIT, ARBITRARILY SMALL ERROR RATES CAN BE ACHIEV D BY USING UNCODE M-ary transmissions with linear receiver filtering. Such a communication method can not yield arbitrarily small error rates on Rayleigh fading circuit. Quantitative result indica e, in fact, that the improvem nt obtained in communicating binary data with M-ary transmissions is equivalent to saving in ransmi ter po er of l s h 4.6 b. A somewhat greater improvement can be realized when M-ary alphabets re used to communicate from those data sources that display a natural M-ary structure--for example, tel type. Certain relations to coding, and the necessity of nonlinear filtering, are discussed. (Author)
