MASS SPECTROGRAPHIC LINES OF THE ELEMENTS

Abstract

A ompilation of tables which records the lines observable by RF spark ionization of inorganic solids in a Mattauch-Herzog double-focusing mass spectrograph is presented. Arrangement by element presents the lines for each in or er of th ir increasing apparent mass. For all the known naturally-occurring isotopes, the tables delineate: ions with charge of +1 through 9, multiatomic clusters containing from one to ten atoms and eight of the more frequently-occurring charge-exchange combinations. Each ntry gives the isotope and element identification, a coded explana ion of the line formation, the pparent mass a d square roo of the pparent mass to nine significant figures (when t e mass is known to this accuracy) and the relative abundanc . These tables prove to be a very useful complement to the Table of A TOMIC Masses compiled by R. L. Heath for the identification of mass spectrographic li es. The eath table presents the li es of all elements in one continuous list from the lowest to the highest apparent mass, and is very useful for making tentative line identification . Our tables, because they are arranged by element, aid in identifying rapidly all lines due to the major elements of the sample and in confirming or rejecting tentative identifications much more conveniently.
