THE NORMAL CONSTANTS OF MOTION IN QUANTUM MECHANICS TREATED BY PROJECTION TECHNIQUE

Abstract

The normal operators Lambda commuting with the Hamiltonian form an important class of constants of motion. It is shown that the eigenfunctions to Lambda associated with different eigenvalues are not only orthogonal ut also non-interacting with respect to the Hamiltonian. Every trial function may be resolved into eigenfunctions to Lambda by means of a projection operator formalism, which may also be used to split the secular equation into independent parts. The exchange phenomenon, the antisymmetry requirement, the angular momenta, the cyclic o erators, and the translations are treated as illustrative examples. (Author)
