ON THE STABILITY AND MANUAL CONTROLLABILITY OF THE TANDEM PROPELLER SUBMARINE

Abstract

A prelimin ry exploration wa made of man's capacity to control a six-degree-of-freedom vehicle with the expected dominan dynamic response characteristics of a tandem propeller submarine. An experiment to determine the informational requirements was conducted using a sufficient number of subjects to indicate whether or not a human operator can control a problem of this magnitude. Included are a description and analy is of the data collected, their m ani g wit respect to the development of displays for the most efficient presentation of required information to the operator, and the development of an optimum control and stability augmentation system for the vehicle.
