SPECIALTY SILICONE ELASTOMERS

Abstract

T HE SYNTHESIS AND POLYMERIZATION OF A NEW CLASS OF SILANE MONOMERS, THE ALPHA, OMEGA-BIS(ethoxydi et ylsilyl) -P YL)-perfluoroalk e is reported. h e were prepared from the intermediate alpha, omega-bis(bromoph nyl)-perfluoroalkanes, three of which are describe . 1,2-Bis(p-(ethoxydimethylsilyl)-phenyl)-tetrafluoroethane and 1-(p-(ethoxydimethylsilyl)-phenyl)-3(m-(ethoxydimethylsilyl)-ph nyl)-hexafluoropropane, prepared from the corresponding bis-bromophenyl compounds, were omopolymerized. The former monomer yielded a solid homopolymer, but it could be copolymerized with diethoxydimethylsilane to form a more suit ble gum. The lat er monom r gave a homopolymeric gum. This polymer, upon heating in a vacuum, depolymerized, forming an unusual monomeric cyclic disiloxane. The synthesis of 1, -bis(p-(ethoxydimethyl ilyl)phenyl)-hexafluoroprop ne from the third bis(bromophenyl)-perfluoroalk ne was unsuccessful on a preparative cale. (Author)
