OSMOMETRY OF HIGH POLYMER SOLUTIONS

Abstract

OSMOTIC PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS ON THREE ALKYL METHACRYLATE POLYMERS ARE DESCRIBED. These include an unfractionated poly(n-docosyl methacrylate) and samples of fractionated poly(n-lauryl methacrylate) and poly(2-ethylbutyl methacrylate). Weight average/number average molecular wt. ratios ranged from about 10 for the unfractionated material to 1.5 - 2 for the fractionated samples. Osmotic second virial coefficients were obtained. From experimental M sub w and M sub n values, viscosity average molecular weights were estimated. Relations between viscosity and the various types of average molecular weights are described and discussed. (Author)
