SYNTHESIS OF REGULATED STRUCTURE POLYPHENYLETHERSILOXANE ELASTOMERS

Abstract

The yield of the high temperature alkaline hydrolysis of 4,4'-dibromodiphenylether to form 4,4' dihydroxydiphenylether was increased to 47%. Although the role of the copper oxide catalyst is not completely understood, the major side reactions were established. This reaction offers a feasible method for obtaining valuable intermediates for the synthesis of the various p,p'-dihydroxypolyphenylethers. Two copolymers of diphenylether with dimethyl siloxane were prepared. Because of monofunctional, chainstopping compounds formed during the preparation of the 4,4' dihydroxydiphenylether, the copolymers are of low molecular weight. Their thermal stability appears to be excellent. (Author)
