PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF PASSIVE ROLL STABILIZATION TANKS INSTALLED ABOARD THE USNS ELTANIN (TAK270)

Abstract

Full-scale tests were conducted on the USNS Eltanin to evaluate the effects of the passive roll tank stabilizer on the rolling motion and other motions in a seaway; to gain ship operating information; and to verify design procedures for anti-roll tanks. Measurements were made of rollAMPLITUDE, SWAY ACCELERATION, YAW ANGLE, PITCH ANGLE, HEAVE ACCELERATION, WAVE HEIGHT, AND WATER TRANSFER IN THE TANKS. Roll angle, sway acceleration, and wave height are presented. The tanks reduced the rolling motion 13 to 79% depending upon tank depth, angle of encounter, ship speed, and the seaway in which the measurements were made. (Author)
