ON THE GEOMETRICAL OPTICS APPROXIMATION FOR WAVES IN TRANSMISSION LINES WITH VARIABLE PARAMETERS

Abstract

An examination is made of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in dispersive systems with variable parameters: in a waveguide whose dielectric and magnetic permeabilities depend on time and the longitudinal coordinate, and in a neutral plasma with a variable electron concentration. It is shown that the fields in both cases can be described by a second order partial differential equation with variable coefficients. The investigation is made by successive approximations. The amplitude and frequency change of the wave in geometrical optics approximation are examined. The results obtained are illustrated by two particular examples. (Author)
