INVESTIGATION OF PHOTOEMISSION SOLAR ENERGY CONVERTERS

Abstract

The feasibility of making a photoemissive solar energy converter was investigated theoretically and in practical devices. Theoretical considerations indicate that with optimum photoemitters and collectors efficiencies of the order of 3%ARE ACHIEVABLE. The maximum efficiency achieved in a practical device was only one-tenth of one percent. In support of the work done directly in fabrication of photoemissive solar energy converters, numerous measurements were made of the properties of photoemitters under the high light and high current conditions typical of photoemissives solar energy converter. It was established that several photoemitters can operate for relatively long periods at high current densities without excessive fatigue. Techniques were developed to place photoemissive surfaces on conductive substrates having such conductivity as to make the combination suitable for use in photoemissive solar energy converters.
