INVESTIGATIONS OF THE OPTICAL DETECTION OF HYPERFINE RESONANCES IN ALKALI VAPORS

Abstract

The results of digital computer solutions of the equations describing optical pumping dynamics are presented for various ratios of optical pumping time constant to relaxation time constant and for several conditions of excited state mixing. The time development of populations following the reversal of orientation by a 180 degree pulse is obtained, along with the change in absorption caused by the reversal and its subsequent recovery. The relation between this initial change in absorption and the relaxation time can be determined and is useful in interpreting 180 degree pulse experiments on relative relaxation times for different conditions, such as different wall coatings. A short discussion is given of some problems anticipated in direct optical pumping of atomic hydrogen using Lyman-alpha radiation. (Author)
