TRANSMISSION RELIABILITY OF MOBILE VHF RADIO

Abstract

A study was made of the transmission reliability of vehicular VHF radio equipment to investigate possible means for improvement. It was found that: (1) a significant gain in reliability of transmission over the planned operating range of currently programed vehicular-radio equipment can be obtained by elevating the height of the transmitting antenna by a feasible amount; (2) additional experimental data on propagation between vehicle-mounted radio equipment operating in the vhf band are needed for better prediction of transmission reliability and system performance; and (3) range performance of vehicular radio as generally stated without qualification may be misleading; equipment currently programed for installation is estimated to have marginal transmission reliability for the stated operating ranges.
