NEW EVIDENCE CONCERNING THE ORIGIN OF FATIGUE CRACKS AS A SURFACE PHENOMENON

Abstract

Recent results from studies of surface effects, particularly at ultra-high vacuum, are reviewed with respect to the origin and growth of fatigue cracks. These results appear to offer new evidence tending to substantiate an earlier theory of fatigue proposed by the author. (Author)
