ON THE VALIDITY OF SCALES DERIVED BY RATIO AND MAGNITUDE ESTIMATION METHODS

Abstract

The procedure for scale construction by ratio estimation is analysed and discussed. A brief summary of procedures for scale construction with magnitude estimation is given. Different procedures for testing the internal consistency of ratio matrices are reviewed. Two procedures for submitting ratio matrices to rigorous consistency tests are proposed. It is shown that under special experimental conditions, scales derived by magnitude estimation can likewise be subjected to these tests. The tests are illustrated by data from a series of experiments on velocity perception with both method . (Author)
