TANTALUM ALLOY INGOT RELIABILITY AND SHEET ROLLING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Abstract

Direct arc melting of a composite electrode of the Ta-30Nb-7.5V alloy was selected as the initial method of consolidation. The composite electrode approach was found to be unsuccessful because of Ta segregation which resulted from small pieces of Ta from the electrode falling into the molten pool. An arc remelt of the quartered ingots did not alleviate the segregation problem. A new approach to melting the alloy was selected which consists of a combination of electron-beam and arc melting. Electron-beam melting is used to consolidate a Ta-32.5Nb master alloy followed by arc melting in which the V addition is made. Three electron-beam melted Ta-32.5Nb ingots were melted. These ingots will be quartered and re-arc melted with the proper V addition to complete the Phase II portion of this program. (Author)
