OPTIMAL SCHEDULING OF REPLACEMENT AND INSPECTION

Abstract

The results are summarized of research on the optimal scheduling of replacement and inspection of equipment for which the preparedness model is appropriate. Periodic policies are discussed for inspection or replacement of equipment consisting of a single stochastically failing module. Techniques are given for computing optimal inspection or replacement intervals, first under the assumption that the distribution of times to failure of the stochastically failing module is known, and secondly under the assumption that the form of the distribution is known but the failure rate is unknown. Optimal policies are discussed for replacement, for inspection, and for both jointly. The formal analogy is demonstrated between minimization of cost and minimization of the proportion of downtime.
