THE PREPARATION OF HIGH PURITY RARE EARTH METALS

Abstract

Ultra high purity rare earth metals, praseodymium, europium, gadolinium and lutetium with total metallic impurities of less than 10 ppm have been made. Methods of separation, reduction and purification were: ion exchange, mercury amalgamate oxidation-reduction, dry fluoride preparation, metallothermic reduction and vacuum distillation. Spectrographic methods were improved and refined to obtain greater sensitivity. Gas chromatography was investigated as an analytical tool for determination of impurities in rare earth organo metallics. (Author)
