PERFORMANCE OF BURIED PLASTIC ELECTRICAL CONDUIT UNDER STATIC LOADS

Abstract

A study was made to determine the vertical deflection and change in diameter of plastic electrical conduits when buried under two feet of compacted dry sand and loaded on the sand surface. Three sizes of conduits examined were 2, 4, and 6 inches in diameter. An increase in load increased the deflection at midspan of every conduit. The smaller conduits had higher increase in deflection with increase in load than the larger sizes. The range of maximum vertical deflections recorded at midspan of the conduits was approximately 0.03 to 0.17 inch. The change in diameter of the conduits at midspan increased with increase in load. The larger conduits had higher increase with load than the smaller sizes. The range of maximum vertical change in diameter was approximately 0.7 to 3.6 of the original diameter of the conduits. This investigation indicates that all of the tested conduits are able to withstand a load of 20 kips on a 15-inch plate, approximately 113 psi, applied at the soil surface when buried in two ft of thoroughly compacted dry sand.
