THE APPLICATION OF DISCRIMINATION TRAINING TO DETECTION IN A VIGILANCE TASK

Abstract

The results are presented of two experiments which tested the effectiveness of a read-through training program. The code name for this program is project LOOK. The experiments were designed to answer two questions: (1) Can experienced operators in the SAGE air surveillance subsystem be taught to improve their performance in discriminating between wanted and unwanted radar signals. (2) Which elements of the training program are effective in accomplishing the improved system performance. Experimental results indicate that read-through training might be a profitable approach in helping solve system problems related to noise. (Author)
