SPONTANIOUS EMISSION OF PHONONS AND SPECTRAL LINE WIDTHS OF SOME RARE EARTH IONS IN CRYSTALS

Abstract

A correlation is found between the line widths in the spectra of rare-earth ions in crystals and relaxation processes between cloion probabilities between neighboring Stark levels are often as high as 10 to the 10th power arc sec. The resulting reduction in the lifetime of such levels is sufficient to broaden optical transitions. Upon continuous excitationAT LOW TEMPERATURES, A POPULATION INVERSION IS MAINTAINED IN A LARGE NUMBER OF ENERGY INTERVALS OF THESE IONS. (Author)
