THE PLACE OF SERVO-MECHANISMS IN THE DESIGN OF AIRCRAFT WITH GOOD FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS

Abstract

The fundamental consideration of the place for 'black boxes' in the design of good stability and handling characteristics is discussed. The shortcomings of the human operator's perception and response which can be safely overcome by the use of servo-mechanisms are dealt with, and suggestions made for less safe tasks for automatic aids. The arguments for and against artificial static stability are also discussed. (Author)
