A STUDY OF TARGET DETECTION BY SONAR OPERATORS

Abstract

R L IVE EFFICIENCY WITH WHICH SONAR OPERATORS CAN DETECT SONAR TARGETS PR SENT D ON BOTH AUDITORY AND VISUAL DISPLAYS WAS DETERMINED UNDER CONDITIONS IN WHICH THE OPERATORS WERE ALERTED TO THE IMMINENT APPEARANCE OF A TARGET, AND ALSO IN A RATHER PROLONGED WATCHSTANDING SITUATION WHEN THEY WERE NOT ALERTED.
