DESCRIPTION AND MANUAL OF OPERATION FOR ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERTER
Abstract
IN THE STUDY OF RADIO STATION RECOGNITION FROM SIGNAL STRENGTH FADING CHARACTERISTICS, IT HAS BEEN NECESSARY TO PROVIDE SAMPLES OF THE FADING PATTERNS IN A FORM SUITABLE FOR USE BY THE IBM 650 computer. The analog to digital converter (ADC) described performs these functions in two steps: (1) the AVC voltage is read automatically at a given sampling rate and the 2-decimal digit values are punched on paper tape in teletype (5 channel) code; and (2) the prepared tape is then placed on an IBM 47-tape-to-card converter, which produces IBM cards in the required format for 650 input. The tape-preparation section of the system consists of a radio receiver (Signal Corps R-390), a digital voltmet r (DVM) with electrical BCD output (Beckman 5350 R, a 5-ch nnel paper-tape punch (IBM 962-E1), and a converter/control unit to convert data to proper punching format and synchronize operations.
