SUITABILITY OF VITON B O-RINGS FOR USE IN 3000 PSI HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS CONTAINING PETROLEUM BASE FLUID OR CELLULUBE 220

Abstract

An investigation was made (1) to develop simulated service tests for evaluating Viton B O-rings for use in 3000 psi hydraulic systems contain ing either petroleum-base fluid or phosphateester fluid, and (2) to prepare a specification covering Viton B seal of all type for this service. Vi on B O- rings with teflon backup ring were shown to seal ASTM No. 3 oil (petroleum base) and Cellulube 220 (phosphate ester) at 300 F in static service and at 160 F in dynamic service. Dynamic service at higher temperatures was impractical because of failure of the Teflon backup rings. The hydraulic pressure used in all tests was 3000 psi. The tendency of humidified Viton B O-rings to corrode metals cannot be eliminated by compounding the Viton B stock differently, but can be eliminated by erely washing the O-rings with soap and water before installation. A proposed specification for Viton B seal of all types is given. The results of the specification tests performed on laboratory-compound ded O- rings and on commercial O-rings are described.
