THE TECH/OPS SERIES ON PROGRAMMING SYSTEMS CL-II: A GENERAL PURPOSE SYNTAX DIRECTED COMPILER

Abstract

A novel organization for a compiler was designed which will allow translation of a large variety of problem-oriented algorithmic languages such as ALGOL, JOVIAL, etc. into the machine codes of most large computers. The compiler is controlled by a collection of tables which describe the formation rules and grammar of the input language as well as the peculiar characteristics of the target computer. A prototype of the compiler has been constructed and experiments performed to test the adequacy of the design concepts. Results have demonstrated the soundness of the design. Certain desirable modifications needed in an operational version of the compiler are discussed. Appendices give detailed flow charts and descriptions of he components of the prototype. (Author)
