TABLES OF FOUR LETTER COMPUTER CODES USED IN LIBRARY RETRIEVAL PROGRAM

Abstract

The Library at the Naval Ordnance L bora ory, in its information retrieval program, analyzes technical reports and assigns descriptors covering bibliographic information an subject content of reports. A four letter code is associated with each descriptor and he code serves as input to the IBM 7090 computer. Tables of four letter alp ab ical combinations were constructed to facili ate the assigni g of computer codes to descriptors. The tables serve as a check list in assigning computer codes and avoid duplication si ce a separate code is used for each descriptor having a different meaning. The four letter codes may be used for any retrieval system requiring a machine language. (Author)
