AN EVALUATION OF THE NEED FOR FILTRATION SYSTEMS TO PROTECT SHELTERED PERSONNEL FROM RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT

Abstract

The hazards associated with situations involving acute radioactive contamination of the atmosphere are reviewed and tested for air filtration systems to protect personnel in various types of structures in such situations is evaluated. This report concerns only radioactive contamination of the air and makes no attempt to evaluate the hazards associated with biological and chemical types of contamination. The material was drawn from the following sources: (a) THE OPEN LITERATURE AND, TO A LESSER EXTENT, THE CLASSIFIED LITERATURE; (b) interview and visits to installations; and (c) personal experience.
