DEVELOPMENT OF MICROELEMENT TRIMMER CAPACITORS

Abstract

Work was conducted on the design and production of trimmer capacitors for use in micro-modules. Trimmer capacitors in microelement form factor in three ranges of capacitance were produced. Tests proved that the basic design was at least equal in performance to conventional components. When the microelement trimmer capacitors were assembled in circuit modules, the modules successfully met all circuit requirements. Nominal capacitance ranges of 1.5 to 5 pf, 3 to 10 pf, and 2 to 18 pf were achieved. More than 750 final-grade elements were fabricated and tested. The tests showed that the basic design of the trimmer capacitors engendered high reliability, and was suitable for use in all of the specified applications. Because the trimmer capacitor would contain moving parts, the development of special assembly and encapsulation techniques unique to this microelement type was included in the over-all task objective. These techniques were established and utilized with satisfactory results in the assembly of test and circuit modules. (Author)
