DEVELOPMENT OF 2400 F FORGING DIE SYSTEM

Abstract

The upper operating temp ratur limit of Inconel 713C forging dies was determined by progressively increasing the load and temperature conditions. Ultimate failure occurred by gross cracking at 1900 F under a 1000-ton load while forging steel. During the research to reduce the requisite number of die sequences by an extrusion-forging technique, the die was destroyed. The die design was odified and rebuilding is under way. Prototype construction of a 2400 F system has begun, with the ultimate decisio concerning die material still pending. (Author)
