A TIME SERIES ANALYSIS OF RADAR OBSERVATIONS ON SATELLITES

Abstract

A time series analysis was performed on observations from satellite 59, Epsilon I, pass 319, as taken by the Millstone Hill radar located at Westfod, Mass. The observations were fitted by a trend and autoregressive scheme and the convariance matrix of the residuals were obtained. It was found that fitting the observations in time by a trend and autoregression scheme better described the process than trend fitting alone. In addition, this gave rise to independence between the observations. An important consequence of this result is that it can be shown that best estimators for predicting orbital elements can be obtained with independent estimators of the observations that describe the process.
