PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION: A PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
A direction is suggested for future research in programmed instruction and for the application of this educational technique. The view is taken that programmed instruction must be considered in perspective among other educational techniques, each having its own advantages and disadvantages for specific requirements. Research should be directed toward the discovery of ways in which techniques of programmed instruction may be combined with other educational methods to optimize instruction for different tasks and for different student characteristics. If systematic relationships governing the effectiveness of different instructional procedures are to be discovered, an early step in the suggested research program will be an analysis of the task and student variables. A portion of this paper will be devoted to a consideration of one system of task analysis, and to a discussion of research problems developing from this analysis. First, however, it may be useful to review briefly a number of past trends in autoinstructional research and practice, and to consider how certain changes in the currently prevailing view of programmed instruction may facilitate future development of the field.
