ENGINEERING DESIGN INVESTIGATION OF FAA CENTER-TO-TOWER RADAR HAND-OFF DATA LINK AND PPI ADAPTATION EQUIPMENT

Abstract

The results are outlined of a design investigation which covered the following major areas: (1) the definition of the most feasible methods and the equipment required to transfer radar hand-off data between air route traffic control centers and airport control towers; and (2) the definition of the most feasible methods and the equipment required for adapting the radar handoff equipment for presentation of data on various types of existing PPI radar displays. This report includes an outline of the design approach used in conducting the design study, a b the standpoint of their suitability in meeting the subject requirements, a detailed description of the recommended radar hand-off data link and PPI adaptation equipment, and an analysis of the overall accuracy of the recommended Radar Handoff Sysst be compatible, an analysis of certain performance requirements which define the required design parameters of the equipmief description of the radar scan-converter TV marker hand-off equipment with which the data link and PPI adaption equipment m the standpoint of their suitability in meeting the subject requirements, a detailed description of the recommended radar hand-off data link and PPI adaptation equipment, and an analysis of the overall accuracy of the recommended Radar Handoff Sysst be compatible, an analysis of certain performance requirements which define the required design parameters of the equipment, a discussion of the characteristics of the data link and display systems considered, an evaluation of these techniques from the standpoint of their suitability in meeting the subject requirements, a detailed description of the recommended radar hand-off data link and PPI adaptation equipment, and an analysis of the overall accuracy of the recommended Radar Handoff System. The digital printed circuit cards recommended for implementing major portions of the radar hand-off system are described. (Author)
